Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch ever, according to Activision, with the the games company managing to shift 6.5 million copies of the first person shooter and make $400 million in the first 24 hours of release – and that’s just in the UK and US.
The launch has smashed through a record that was previously held by Call of Duty: Black Ops and before this, you’ve guessed it, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Other records broken include the number of people on Xbox Live at any one time, which happened because everyone was playing Modern Warfare 3.
Call of Duty Elite, Activision’s recently announced subscription based stat tracking oddity has many interesting facets, but one that’s not been talked about too much is the mobile applications that will give users access to the world of Call of Duty on their travels. New apps for iPhone, iPad and Android are on the horizon and promise to go some way toward making the yet unspecified subscription free worthwhile.
The decision to offer bespoke apps is an interesting one, after all the company could have simply plumped for a mobile specific web page which could arguably have been an easier [...]
Yes you read that right ! The countdown to the next in the award winning Call of Duty series has begun! The developers behind Call of Duty, Activision, has started sending out dogtags which has the URL www.findmakarov.com printed on it.
Navigation to this URL brings up a countdown timer, which is set to expire in just under 5 days time.
This according to CrunchGear will lead to the announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (unconfirmed title).
The last title in Call of Duty series was Black Ops, which was released in 2010 and smashed all time sales records.

Activision has announced that it is planning a new Call of Duty game that will NOT be a first person shooter for release in 2011, following the shock move of sacking a number of senior execs at CoD developer Infinity Ward.
The new non-FPS Call of Duty title is to be created by developer Sledgehammer Games, headed up by Dead Space veterans and former Visceral Games bosses Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey.
Activision’s plan is to extend the highly lucrative Call of Duty franchise “into the action-adventure genre”.

Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 racked up $310 million in sales across the U.S. and UK during the first 24 hours of availability. That makes it the biggest video game launch ever. Hooray for war simulators!
It works out to 4.7 million units sold across the two countries. These are Activison’s own numbers, by the way, not some wacky Wall Street analyst or anything like that. (Official worldwide numbers aren’t available yet.)
That said, an anylsyt for the Cowen Group said that he expects to see the final worldwide number to clock in at around 7 million.
That really is ridiculous when you think [...]
