Olympus just loosed a trio of compact cameras. Let’s start big with the €329 SZ-30MR. According to Olympus, the 30MR packs a backlit CMOS sensor with 24x (25-600mm) optical zoom and Dual Engine TruePic III+ processing. It also lays claim to being the first to simultaneously record 1080p video while shooting 16 megapixel stills — a feature Oly dubs, Multi Recording. The SZ-20 lacks the MR and dials back the zoom to 12.5x but costs a relatively modest €219.
Olympus also announced a silver or black TG-810 compact for €299. First and foremost is the cam’s claim for ruggedness: [...]
Brace yourself, Samsung has new point-and-shoots to fill in what little pockets of consumerism weren’t intrigued by any of the company’s five CES shooters… or even the five more announced just weeks later. First up is the PL20 (pictured left). A 14 megapixel CCD sensor, 27mm wide angle lens, 5x zoom, digital image stabilization, 720p 24fps HD video with Smart Filters. That one comes out in March for a penny under $120, with a choice of silver, pink, black, and tomato red (Sammy’s description). For the ES80, subtract two megapixels from the sensor, nix the HD recording, [...]
Along with the DMC-FZ100, Panasonic has also announced the Lumix DMC-FZ40 superzoom (FZ45 in Europe). Slotting in where the FZ38/35 left off, it features the same 25-600mm equiv. lens as the FZ100, but with a 14.1MP CCD sensor and simpler 230K dot 3.0 inch fixed LCD (as opposed to the FZ100′s CMOS sensor and high-res screen). The FZ40 also offers AVCHD Lite 720p HD video recording, manual shooting modes and ‘Sonic Speed’ auto-focus system that the company says offers the industry’s fastest focus times. The European FZ45 version is limited to 29 minutes video recording. [...]

The WX5 includes a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens starting at 24mm equivalent and a 2.8″ LCD, while the TX9 comes with a 3.5″ touchscreen LCD and a 25-100mm equivalent lens. Other [...]
We don’t know for sure if the Altek Leo—a smartphone with a 14MP sensor, big honking 3X zoom lenses, and HD video recording—would run on Android or not, but I know that I want it to.
The company hasn’t announced what’s the phone’s operating system yet, but the buttons seem to indicate that it will be Google’s phone operating system.
In addition to its 14 megapixel CCD sensor with HD video recording, Xenon flash, video LED flash, and 3x optical zoom, the Altek Leo includes Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. More details will be available at CommunicAsias 2010.
