Review: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 OverClock Edition

Overview Sapphire has waded in first with its take on AMD’s latest HD 7000 series card, the Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 OverClock edition. Unlike the AMD Radeon HD 7970 there are unlikely to be very many strictly reference models of the Radeon HD 7950. Instead we’re more likely to see card manufacturers taking the opportunity to put their own spin on the PCB, clocks and cooling. The HD 7970 was a reference model all the way down the line, with overclocked versions only coming much further down the release schedule. The Radeon HD 7950 though is being freed by AMD to allow manufacturers [...]

How to overclock the GTX 590

Nvidia’s GTX 590 is not a card that needs to be overclocked for gaming performance. Two GF110 GPUs, as found on the GTX 580, working in unison will kick any game’s behind, and the idea of being short of frames with the card’s stock clock settings is wild and preposterous. What’s intriguing about the spec sheet of the 590 though is that each GPU has been down-clocked significantly to sit safely on the same bit of circuit board (any lisping readers are invited to read that last part aloud). While a big performance increase is evident from single to dual-GPU cards, [...]

Video: AMD’s Fusion A-Series Chips: 10.5-hour battery life, DirectX11 graphics, and USB 3.0 support

AMD’s Llano platform has been on our radar for more than two years, and finally, the company has come clean with its latest class of hybrid CPU / GPU chips, officially dubbed the Fusion A-Series. Unlike the low-power flavor of Fusion accerlated processing units already on the market, these 32-nanometer APUs were designed with desktops and mainstream laptops in mind, taking direct aim at Intel’s Core 2011 processors with the promise of superior processing and discrete-level graphics, and 10-plus hours of battery life. Aside from the assorted performance and battery life claims the [...]

AMD’s Phenom II X4 980 3.7Ghz Black Edition Processor

At only $195, it’s hard to deny that AMD’s new Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition desktop chip is a bargain. Its four cores hum along at 3.7GHz, the fastest base clock speed of any consumer CPU, and the unlocked multiplier should make it trivial for overclockers to push this beast to 4GHz and beyond. The 980 slides right into the same price point as the previous champ, the Phenom II X4 975, and knocks a few bucks off the former clock-frequency king. All of this seems like great news for AMD fans. Of course, if you’re starting from scratch and not just looking to upgrade an [...]

Toshiba’s P770 and P775 3D Satellite laptops

Toshiba’s 3D monocle may have been a joke, but what you’re looking at above is not. It’s one of the latest additions to its 3D Satellite lineup, now growing to include the P770 and P775 3D. Both include massive 18.4-inch displays that clock in at 120Hz, enabling use of NVIDIA active-shutter glasses — which you’ll have to find a spot for in your laptop bag. Dual webcams in the bezel let you add a little depth to your video calls, while the HDMI output can manage depth-enabled content too. There’s a re-writeable Blu-ray drive and what’s sure to be a [...]

Intel vs AMD

Buying a computer can be a lengthy process involving many complex decisions, but none come with quite as much associated technical jargon as figuring out the best CPU. And so before you even know it, you’re drowning in talk of cores and clock speeds, socket types and memory controllers, power consumption, caches and more. While you’ll need to consider at least some of these issues, there’s an easier way to approach your purchasing problems. And that’s to ignore the fine detail, just for the moment, and focus first on a more fundamental question: Intel vs AMD, which [...]

Tegra 2 vs. Hummingbird vs. Snapdragon vs. OMAP

Nvidia seems to finally be getting some traction in the mobile CPU game. The Tegra 2 chip will be in several phones and tablets in the next few months, and is the first dual-core mobile processor available. In response Texas Instruments, maker of the popular OMAP mobile chips, is talking up their own upcoming OMAP4 cores. With all this talk of clock speeds, some important details of mobile processing get lost in the shuffle. When we talk about OMAP, Snapdragon, Tegra, or Hummingbird, we’re really talking about a system-on-a-chip (SoC). There’s more to it than just the clock [...]

Google Nexus S overclocked to 1.2GHz

Even at its default 1GHz speed, Samsung’s Hummingbird is one of the finest mobile processor around, but are you really going to complain about getting the option to crank an extra 200 milion clock cycles out of it? Morfic over on the xda-developers forums has delivered a kernel permitting Nexus S owners to achieve just that, although he still has to fix an issue that disables the phone’s Bluetooth capabilities.Still, if you value ludicrous speed over wireless peripherals, the source link is your friend.
