Gigabyte’s no stranger in the field of dockable computing devices, and its M2432 laptop shown off at Computex is yet another example proving just this. Let’s focus on the actual machine first: here we have a Core i5-2410M (2.3GHz to 2.9GHz) rig packing a 14-inch 1,366 x 768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics 3000, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, and a DVD burner that can be swapped with a secondary battery. You’ll also find 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, HDMI-out, VGA-out, 1.3 megapixel webcam, an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port, and two USB 3.0 ports on this Windows 7 Home [...]
Confirming what everyone was pretty positive about in the first place, Intel has announced that its next generation of Core processors—code name: Sandy Bridge—will be hitting the market early next year for both desktops and laptops. They’re built on the same 32nm process as the current batch of Core guts, and more importantly continue the graphics integration that the Core i3, i5, and i7′s Achilles heel.
Not many more details are available yet, other than an unspecified performance and battery life boost.

At this point, it’s pretty obvious that GPUs will soon be playing a huge role in modern day supercomputers — a role that may just rival that of the tried-and-true CPU. Virginia Tech is gleefully accepting $2 million in order to build a GPU and CPU-enabled HokieSpeed supercomputer, and today DARPA is handing out $25 million to NVIDIA in order to develop “high-performance GPU computing systems.” Specifically the Defense Department’s research and development arm is aiming to address a so-called “crisis in computing,” and if all goes well, the four-year [...]
MSI’s back with a pair of new notebooks that combine the power of Intel Core i5 CPUs with good portability. These notebooks rock a Core i5-450M CPU along with Intel GMA HD GPU chipset. The rest is pretty standard with 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, HDMI out, webcam and an assortment of ports. The P600 comes with an 8-cell battery and costs $829 where the S600 instead has a 4-cell but rings in at $799.

NVIDIA has strapped together more graphics processing power than you can shake a stick at, and it’s named these pixel-pushing monsters after one of the gods of electricity, Tesla.
Now the company has its GeForce line of graphics cards for gaming and entertainment, Quadro for design and creation and now Tesla for high-performance graphics visualization for oil and gas exploration, brain research, weather prediction and other such intense tasks. And yes, it can certainly play Doom, but that would be like using a nuclear weapon to kill a mosquito.

Half of kids under the age of 15 will be bought touchscreen computers like the Apple iPad rather than using mouse and keyboard by 2015, according to the latest research by Gartner.
Analysts Gartner believe that computers bought for kids and leisure will have a 50/50 shot at being a touchscreen PC, but that only 10 per cent of computers bought for business will be utilising the technology.
The latter needs little explanation, with typing being kind of important for productivity, and not even Apple managing to provide a tactile comfortable typing experience to date on a capacitive touchscreen. [...]

A faulty update for BitDefender anti-virus software has caused chaos for many 64-bit Windows users.
Instead of protecting systems from new malware threats, the update – issued earlier this week – decided to detect a number of essential Windows files as a Trojan virus (trojan.fakealert.5) and wipe them in the process.
This meant that some executable files were wiped, forcing some unlucky users to do a full re-install.
BitDefender has issued an apology over the gaffe, saying on its blog: “We understand your disappointment, we have solved the problem for many of our users already and we [...]

There’s now a threat to online life that’s so potentially potent it requires a new form of defence. Rootkits hide inside the operating system, actively defending themselves and hiding their presence.
To arm your system against rootkits, you first need to understand them. So, where have they come from, how have they evolved and how, crucially, can they be stopped?
A rootkit is a program that allows a hacker to come and go as he pleases, unhindered by your computer’s defences. No firewall will stop him and no antivirus program will detect his activities. Rootkits subvert the [...]
