iPhone 4S vs. iPhone 4, Galaxy S II, Nokia N8 and Amaze 4G

Siri’s sweet and all, but for many of us that new eight megapixel sensor and f/2.4 aperture lens are what really makes Apple’s iPhone 4S an appealing upgrade. We spent the weekend shooting around New York City with the iPhone 4S, along with some other top smartphones — the iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S II, Nokia N8 and HTC’s Amaze 4G — in order to determine just which phone’s camera reigns supreme. And in order to capture video and stills with consistent framing among all five devices, we secured each smartphone to that homemade quintuple cameraphone mount that [...]

Haier’s transparent organic TV

What’s the worst thing about your TV? If you said “opaqueness,” boy have we got the set from you. This is a 22-inch transparent organic TV from the folks at Haier (you know, the ones who also showed off that mind control TV today). It’s a slim display with a metal bezel that has a clear OLED at its center with a 1680 x 1050 resolution. The images appeared pretty sharp on screen, though the colors didn’t particularly pop. And really, this thing isn’t likely headed to any living rooms in the near future — Haier sees it more as an advertising tool, letting [...]

Review: Toshiba 37RL853B

The Toshiba 37RL853B offers a little bit of everything – it’s a contemporary looking LCD TV with an LED edge-lit Full HD panel, decent connectivity, Freeview HD, plenty of user-adjustable tweaks and smattering of multi-media features including access to iPlayer and YouTube. Not bad really for what is after all, a budget TV. The 37RL853 sits slap bang in the middle of Toshiba’s RL series, with the 32-inch 32RL853 and 42-inch 42RL853 offering the same specification for around £50 less and £100 more respectively. The RL series itself is more or less in the middle of Toshiba’s [...]

Best DSLRs for Shooting Video

Some offer top-notch settings that promise professional quality and intelligent controls. When spending upwards of £1,000 there’s a lot to consider: which model produces the best quality footage; which can autofocus with ease (if this is important to your movie making); or how much manual control do you get over exposure? There’s also a mixture of Four Thirds, APS-C and full-frame sensors available. We’ve rounded up five [...]

LG’s Nano LED backlit LW9800 HDTV

While LG’s 2011 HDTV lineup has been largely a success so far — we found a lot to like in the LW5600 we reviewed and quarterly earnings seem to justify its 3D and LED technology — some wouldn’t be satisfied without an LED backlit (rather than edge lit) option. That issue is solved now with the new LW9800 series, shown off here in Korea as the LW980S. Announced in two sizes, 55- and 47-inches, both feature “Nano LED” local dimming with as many as 2,300 sources in the larger one and 480Hz motion technology. They also include other LG standard features like Cinema [...]
