Download Ubuntu 11.10 ‘Oneiric Ocelot’

In case you haven’t been keeping an eye on the countdown, we thought we’d remind you that Ubuntu 11.10 — otherwise known as Oneiric Ocelot — is now available to download (completely free of charge, of course). That brings with it an updated version of the Unity interface that includes features like a new alt + tab switcher and “Lenses” with some expanded functionality instead of the previous “Places” feature — not to mention full support for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other script languages. Did we mention it also now has its own soundtrack? [...]

Facebook is coming for your children

For many people, social networks are the internet: they’ll spend all day on Facebook or Twitter, with the odd break to visit an online shop or do some work. But the big networks aren’t satisfied. They want more. Much more. They want your kids. Not literally, of course. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t like the way the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act prevents Facebook from giving accounts to under-13s. But it’s not because he wants to make money from advertisers desperate to target the elusive and big-spending pre-teen market. No sirree. It’s [...]

BBC iPlayer going international next year

The BBC’s iPlayer video-on-demand service has been an unqualified success since its rollout back in 2007 and now it’s taking the next logical step in expanding its reach: it’s going global. Such is the word from John Smith, the generically named head of BBC Worldwide, who sees the international market for British shows as “under-exploited” and wants to see the iPlayer opened up beyond the Queen’s home isles. Of course, since continental Europeans and North Americans aren’t subject to the same backbreaking TV license fee, there’ll be a new commercial [...]

Opera ‘very satisfied’ with browser ballot

Opera has told TechRadar that it is “very satisfied” with the layout of the browser ballot screen and that it has resulted in a tripling of downloads of the Opera browser. Speaking to TechRadar at the annual South by South West Interactive conference, Thomas Ford, Senior Communications Manager said: “We’ve seen about a tripling in the number of downloads from the countries that have got the choice screen, so versus what it was before the choice screen, where we’ve seen it in the UK and France and Poland the downloads have about tripled. “Now of course that was [...]

Review: Sumiko Blackbird

An American company, despite the Oriental-sounding name, Sumiko has been known for many years as a purveyor of high-end cartridges at typically slightly less than high-end prices. The Blackbird is very much in that tradition with a specification that wouldn’t look out of place in a dearer cartridge. The most obvious feature that marks it out as high end, however, is the construction, which with its complete lack of body and protection fairly screams ‘enthusiast product’. It’s all been done for a reason, of course. The ills of a resonant outer body on a cartridge have [...]

What is Science?

I’m working on creating an online course that is the equivalent of my face-to-face intro astronomy course. Think of it as an “astronomy for poets” course, as there’s very little math, and it’s an overview course. Below is the first online lecture for it, or if the embedding doesn’t work well for you, here’s the direct link.
