Download Ubuntu 11.10 ‘Oneiric Ocelot’
In case you haven’t been keeping an eye on the countdown, we thought we’d remind you that Ubuntu 11.10 — otherwise known as Oneiric Ocelot — is now available to download (completely free of charge, of course). That brings with it an updated version of the Unity interface that includes features like a new alt + tab switcher and “Lenses” with some expanded functionality instead of the previous “Places” feature — not to mention full support for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other script languages. Facebook is coming for your children
For many people, social networks are the internet: they’ll spend all day on Facebook or Twitter, with the odd break to visit an online shop or do some work.
But the big networks aren’t satisfied. They want more. Much more.

BBC iPlayer going international next year
The BBC’s iPlayer video-on-demand service has been an unqualified success since its rollout back in 2007 and now it’s taking the next logical step in expanding its reach: it’s going global. The OLPC plan to give 30 million laptops to Africa by 2015
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) has recently announced an exciting new partnership in East Africa, with newly-ambitious plans to deliver 30 million laptops to primary school children across the region by 2015.
The new partnership between OLPC and the East African Community (EAC) is now looking at ways of raising the large amounts of money required to fund the laptop scheme over the coming five years.
EAC represents the governments of Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Burundi.

Opera ‘very satisfied’ with browser ballot
Opera has told TechRadar that it is “very satisfied” with the layout of the browser ballot screen and that it has resulted in a tripling of downloads of the Opera browser.
Speaking to TechRadar at the annual South by South West Interactive conference, Thomas Ford, Senior Communications Manager said:

An American company, despite the Oriental-sounding name, Sumiko has been known for many years as a purveyor of high-end cartridges at typically slightly less than high-end prices. The Blackbird is very much in that tradition with a specification that wouldn’t look out of place in a dearer cartridge.
