How’s this for some big news on an otherwise slow Monday? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has let slip that his company plans to buy popular photo-sharing app Instagram (pending all of the standard regulatory approvals, naturally). According to a report from All Things D‘s Kara Swisher, Facebook will pick up the social app, which got its own long-awaited Android version, for a cool $1 billion in cash and shares. Ole Zuck confirmed the news on his personal blog, adding that the deal won’t affect Instagram’s integration with competing social networks:
We think the fact that [...]
Here’s how Facebook is supposed to work: When you don’t want to be someone’s friend anymore, you unfriend them. Or, if you just want to keep certain things private, you can adjust their access settings. The ability to back out of a friendship is as vital online as it is off, which is why this is worrying: British security researchers Shah Mahmood and Yvo Desmedt have found a simple way to create un-unfriendable zombie accounts (via the Arxiv blog). Here’s how it works:
1. Make a new account
Using an existing account works too, but the trick requires near-constant deactivation.
2. [...]
After that March 10th mishap, Samsung reaffirmed to us that it’d deliver Android 4.0 for its GT-I9100 Galaxy S II when it was darn good and ready — well folks, the company appears ready. It’s just announced both via Facebook and Twitter that the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade that so many have lusted after is now available and will begin its rollout to users in Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Korea today, and will move onto other markets from there — subject to carrier requirements, of course. Better yet, Samsung has affirmed that its Android 4.0 update for the Galaxy Note, Galaxy [...]
Before you’ve even sipped your morning brew, a regional German court has delivered yet another stern judgement affecting a multinational organization. This time it’s Facebook back in the dock over the Friend Finder feature, which uploads a user’s contact list to Zuckerberg’s bunker without proper warning. Another offense involves the ownership of data — any original photo or music track uploaded to Facebook supposedly belongs to the company and can be used however it likes, which has now been deemed to breach data protection laws. Someone ought to add this to [...]

About three years ago Ars Technica has pointed out the Facebook flaw where the photos deleted by its users still exist in the cloud, and accessible via direct links after months or even years. And still there are no improvements done by Facebook to resolve the issue.
According to Facebook’s spokesman:
“Facebooks’s older systems for storing uploaded content did not always delete images from content delivery networks in a reasonable period of time even though they were immediately removed from the site, whereas company is working for new systems which will make the deletion process quicker.”
