iPad vs Netbooks

This might come as a big shocker to all the iPad ‘boo’ crowd out there but it seems like Steve’s Netbook-killer has already starting affecting the growth and sales of Netbooks to a huge extent. A report by Fortune says the following: As her chart (above) shows, sales growth of these low-cost, low-powered computing devices peaked last summer at an astonishing 641% year-over-year growth rate. It fell off a cliff in January and shrank again in April — collateral damage, according to Huberty, from the January introduction and April launch of the iPad. Funny thing is that Netbooks aren’t [...]

Jobs On Q1 2010 Results: Apple Now A $50+ Billion Company — Major New Product This Week

Apple has just announced its Q1 2010 earnings, and as expected, they’re very good. I’ll get to the numbers in a second, but perhaps more notable are two Steve Jobs quotes in the release: “If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it’s surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company.” and “The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.” I think we all know what that means. In terms of the financials for the quarter itself, Apple continued strong momentum in terms [...]

Foursquare Checks-In A General Manager: Former Bebo VP Evan Cohen

Amid rapid growth, Foursquare has hired someone to help ease the load. Evan Cohen, Bebo’s former director of strategy and operations has been hired as Foursquare’s General Manager, we’ve confirmed with co-founder Dennis Crowley. If the title sounds a bit odd, it’s because Foursquare is avoiding having executive-sounding positions, Crowley says. But Cohen’s role will be vital for the startup as he’ll be basically stepping in for much of what takes up Crowley’s time now: big deals, hiring, outgrowing our space, finances, and legal issues. “Everything [...]

Millions of 3-D displays on the way — but what will we watch on them?

By some accounts, 3-D technology has been one of the biggest stories of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (taking place this week in Las Vegas). Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, and Sony have all launched 3-D televisions at the show, and the success of 3-D movie “Avatar” is setting the stage for what will likely be the biggest revival of 3-D filmmaking since its “golden age” in the 1950s. 3-D may even be coming to your mobile device or tablet PC, thanks to new chips by NVIDIA. The market analysts at DisplaySearch predict rapid growth for 3-D displays — from [...]

Assessing Pakistan’s Decade 1999-2009

This December 31, 2009, is not just the end of the year; it brings a momentous decade of achievements in Pakistan to a chaotic and bloody end. After a relatively peaceful but economically stagnant decade of the 1990s, the year 1999 brought a bloodless coup led by General Pervez Musharraf, ushering in an era of accelerated economic growth that led to more than doubling of the national GDP, and dramatic expansion in Pakistan’s urban middle class. The decade also cast a huge shadow of the US “war on terror” on Pakistan, eventually turning the nation into a frontline state in the [...]
