Netflix now streams HD movies on PCs and Macs, but selection still sucks

You’ve been able to stream movies Netflix calls “HD” from Roku boxes and gaming consoles for a while now. But if you wanted to see those same movies on a Mac or PC, you were stuck with watching them in plain old standard definition. That just changed, because Netflix is rolling out streaming HD video on PCs and Macs using the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in. Thanks, Netflix. We have a PC hooked up to our home theater HDTV via HDMI, and this increased resolution is a welcome surprise. But the HD streaming is lame. It’s sorely lacking for a number of reasons, many of which [...]

Wear 3D glasses AND look fabulous? Impossible!

Who decided that 3D glasses had to look supremely ugly? If Hollywood really wants 3D to become mainstream, then someone better make us all look like Hollywood stars in our 3D shades. Look3D has come out with a line of “designer” 3D glasses, including a few that are RealD-certified. They’re available in a variety of frame styles, colors and prescriptions to suit a variety of styles. Take a look at the gallery and tell us what you think. Personally, I don’t think 3D will catch on until I see Angelina Jolie donning a pair of 3D glasses on the red carpet.

Kaleidescape Blu-ray player can copy HD movies for you

Here’s a feature that Hollywood doesn’t want to see become standard on Blu-ray players: the ability to copy HD movies from Blu-ray discs to your home server. But that’s just what the new Kaleidescape M300 and M500 do. They’ll import any Blu-ray, DVD or CD that you wish onto your server for playback later. The catch? Well, there are two of them. The first is that it will require you to have the physical disc in the player to play back the ripped versions, which sort of defeats the entire purpose of ripping. The second is the price: the M330 will set you back $2,495 with [...]

Why Iron Man 2 isn’t in 3D

Iron Man 2 opens this weekend, and it will not be shown in 3D. Why not? We talked to Hollywood insiders to get some answers. The first thing we learned: 3D is the current cash cow, responsible for the two biggest hits of 2010 thus far, Avatar and How to Train Your Dragon. It’s expensive to create 3D movies, but filmmakers can recoup their investment by charging more — a lot more — for movie tickets. There’s a gold rush going on in 3D right now, with some studios such as DreamWorks Animation jumping in with plans to produce all their animated features in 3D from now on. Dreamworks [...]

The Hollywood Sign would make one hell of a hotel

Bay Arch, a Denmark-based architecture firm, has a pretty radical idea for overhauling California’s famous Hollywood sign: turn it into a posh hotel boasting clubs, movie theaters, spas and more. The 105-foot structure would preserve the original 45-foot sign, though it’d obviously be quite a bit larger. The hotel would hide all of its amenities on the side facing the hill, and offer hundreds of rooms for guests and an observation deck for folks to enjoy the view. It’s wild, sure, but you know what? I like it. Check out more in the gallery below.

How to build PVR for free

Personal video recorders (PVRs) are usually quite expensive – and for good reason. This is the device you are entrusting your favourite entertainment to: shows like 24 and Lost, that crucial sporting fixture or last summer’s Hollywood blockbuster that you missed at the cinema and are desperate to see. What if your PVR runs out of space and is unable to record anything on the one night you’re kept late at work and can’t make it home to watch your team in the cup tie of the century? Even worse, what if your PVR’s hard disk fails completely, losing that entire series [...]

Silent Drum can create a creepy soundtrack for your life

I’m a big fan of electronic music, but tend to prefer really creative stuff rather than some guy just noodling on a synthesizer. Few, however, can match the creativity of Peruvian musician Jaime Oliver. While he shouldn’t be confused with the English chef with a similar name, this Oliver manages to cook up his own wonderful stew of amazing sounds. His Silent Drum may look like any old regular drum that you beat with your hand or some sticks, but it’s really an incredibly sophisticated synthesizer control surface. A camera pointed at the bottom of the flexible top skin measures [...]

Ofcom decision shakes up Sky Sports, green-lights Picnic

Sky will be forced to offer its two key sports channels at prices set by Ofcom, but the watchdog washed its hands of Sky Movies. It has also green-lighted the broadcaster’s plans for ‘Picnic’ pay-TV on Freeview, following an investigation into pay television. The argument over Sky’s wholesale rates of its premium content has been raging for years, and Ofcom’s investigation has become a huge focal point of the entire industry. Ofcom published its phase three document on Pay TV and laid out its three rulings – stating that Sky must sell Sky Sports 1 and 2 to its [...]

Electronic books go 3D

3D is beginning to make an impact on the TV industry and home gaming industry, and now it also looks like some new electronic reading tech from South Korea could also see us reading 3D eBooks in the near future.
