Hexane and soyburgers: a retraction

The search for truth goes on: yesterday morning, I blogged a study from the Cornucopia Institute on the use of the neurotoxin hexane in production of soyburgers, which sparked a controversy in the comment thread about the science, focusing mostly on the question of whether any of the volatile hexane would still be present after the burgers made it to your shelf. For the record: I’m dubious about this objection, since in the absence of a study to the contrary, I think it makes sense to assume that the substances you put into food during production are still present at consumption. And of course, [...]

Sci Fi HD coming to Virgin Media

Virgin Media has announced the arrival of Sci Fi HD for its cable platform, with the latest channel due to arrive on 13 April. it’s a case of another day, another HD channel announcement for a UK platform, following a raft of announcements by Virgin and Sky last week. With the channel due to follow its American brother and rebrand as the horribly clumsy SyFy on the same date, Virgin Media customers can look forward to the likes of the V reimagining and, of course, Legend of the Seeker in HD. 6th sense This is the sixth HD channel announced by Virgin Media this year, as the quality of [...]

In Depth: Twitter catastrophes: think before you tweet

Could anything be more dangerous to the modern celebrity than Twitter? The media has always been ready to pounce on famous personalities’ smallest mistakes, but Twitter lends its high-profile users a foghorn. If Jonathan Ross (@Wossy) wasn’t already in enough trouble for leaving lewd messages on Andrew Sachs’ answering machine, his antics on Twitter made him an even juicier tabloid target. “Utterly unwepentant” sniffed The Daily Mail after Ross wrote an update stating “Suspension is fun” on the micro-blogging service during the period that his shows [...]

MySpace Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn On His Way Out After 10 Months On The Job

MySpace Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn will soon be leaving the company, we’ve heard from multiple sources. Hirschhorn joined MySpace in April 2009 as part of the major executive shakeup that replaced the old guard, including long-time CEO Chris DeWolfe. After current CEO Owen Van Natta was chosen, Hirschhorn and COO Mike Jones were quickly brought on board to fill out the newly vacated roster. Since joining MySpace, Hirschhorn has gotten a reputation for slashing products that weren’t deemed to be part of MySpace’s core strategy (given how bloated the site was, that [...]

In Depth: Apple iPad: review of the reaction around the web

Apple’s iPad may not have shocked in the way the iPhone did and it might have been the subject of sustained and surprisingly accurate rumour, but it’s certainly not fallen short of expectations. Or has it? We’ve gathered together the leading views from around the web – including our own first impressions piece. TechRadar is already a fan of the device, but one thing we felt was lacking was multitasking – can this really not be incorporated into the iPhone OS yet? Maybe we’ll get this in iPhone OS 4 though, the iPad is only running 3.2 at this stage. Engadget felt this [...]

Anticipating the Apple Tablet: When journalism becomes fanfiction

For the record, I’m writing these words on a MacBook Pro; the third Mac I’ve owned in the past twelve months. As I do so, I’m listening to music on iTunes through my standard issue iPod headphones, so as not to disturb my neighbours. Less than a foot from where I’m sitting, my iPhone sits charging. I am – as marketers might have it put – “a Mac”. And yet – my God – I’m bored of reading about Apple and their ‘long awaited’ tablet. Like most people who are broadly interested in technology, I set aside part of each day [...]

Flashback – Alex Jones’ infamous ballistic outburst against Mike Delaney of Prothink

For those that may not know, Mike Delaney of “Prothink” is well-known in the “Patriot” community for his anti-jewish/anti-zionist website and as the producer of the documentary “9/11: Missing Links”, which lays out the evidence for the Jewish-Zionist-Israeli-Mossad orchestration of the 9/11 attacks. About the time this exchange occurred (April 7, 2008 Alex Jones Radio Show), Mike was just rising to prominence, had already posted material on his website critical of Alex Jones’ obfuscation of the jewish/zionist issue, and obviously Alex was very aware of [...]
