Review: Panasonic TX-P65VT30

One unexpected side effect from the growing take-up of 3DTVs is that folks are migrating to larger screen sizes. This means a warm welcome should await Panasonic’s TX-P65VT30. This 65-inch iteration of its top-of-the-line NeoPlasma range is a glorious extravagance. The sheer size obviously poses a challenge. It takes three people to get it out of the box and the 56kg weight means wall-mounting will require some serious planning. It’s a good thing then that the supplied pedestal is smart and substantial. Engorged as it is, the design works well, with the edge-to-edge glass fascia taking [...]

Review: Canon PowerShot A3300 IS

The latest user-friendly PowerShot replaces the older A3100 IS, offering a number of exciting upgraded features designed to tempt budding photographers looking for their first compact. Although aimed at beginners, the A3300 IS has quite a bit more functionality on offer than the very basic compacts on the market, including some limited manual controls which we’ll come to momentarily. Headline features of the new A3300 IS – which is available in silver, red, blue and pink – include a 16mp sensor, HD movie recording (720p) and a 5x optical zoom lens with Image Stabilisation: quite [...]

World’s Thinnest Compact Camera Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX55

Sony has announced its new compact camera to fit into its Cybershot range, claiming it to be the thinnest compact currently on the market. Measuring just 12.2mm thick (an iPhone 3GS is 12.3mm thick) the front width of the camera is only just slightly larger than a credit card. Several measures have been put in place to ensure its small size. Firstly, the 5x optical zoom lens is periscope – meaning there’s no protusion from the body of the camera. The TX55 takes micro SD cards, rather than standard full-sized SD cards to also help reduce size. Finally, the 3.3inch touchscreen on the [...]

How to Unlock The Region Of Your DVD Player?

Back in the DVD golden age, I can remember having a difficult decision to make, regarding DVDs of course and their dreaded players. DVDs were brand new tech (I’m showing my age again, aren’t I?) and wanting to be at the front of the technological curve, I wanted to get my hands on a DVD player. Problem was, I knew those little plastic platters had a new-fangled region lock on them, and I didn’t like it. So, did I buy a UK, region 2 machine or import a US, region 1 player? In the end I bought a UK one and got it modified so it would play anything I threw at it, but that’s a whole other [...]

Facebook shortcuts, tips and tricks

Do you have hundreds of friends on Facebook? Then it’s a good idea to take the time to organise them into different groups, or lists as Facebook describes them. Lists can be used for privacy reasons – to exclude certain status updates, for example – or simply to simplify the sharing of links, photographs and status updates with a common group of people, such as your family members. When referring to other Facebook users in your status updates, you can create a link to that person’s profile quickly and easily – just type @ followed by the first few letters [...]

Temple Grandin, Robin Hood, 44 Inch Chest, Alamar, Tales from the Script

January 21, 2011 Temple Grandin (2010) ****1/2Directed by Mick Jackson My tweet: Temple Grandin (2010)- Danes is spectacular in an earnest yet inspirational look at autism & accomplishment. Compelling watch. ****1/2 of 5 Other thoughts: Temple Grandin is a wonderful movie. It’s better than I ever could have imagined a made for cable biopic about an autistic woman who invented a humane way to slaughter cows might be. There are so many tricky aspects to a movie about this subject matter. First of all, how do you go about playing an autistic woman, especially considering that the film [...]

Rosemary’s Baby

January 15, 2011 Rosemary’s Baby (1968) ****1/2Directed by Roman Polanski My tweet: Rosemary’s Baby (1968)- Genuinely terrifying and undeniably beautiful. Farrow’s fantastic. Few clunky scenes. ****1/2 out of 5 Other thoughts: What is it about the personification of evil that makes for such terrifying horror films such as The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby? In a way, the idea that a creature from hell acquires power in this world by taking on human or semi-human form really ought to be so ridiculous that the viewer can easily remove himself or herself from ultimate terror. [...]

Trash Humpers

January 8, 2011 Trash Humpers (2010) ****Directed by Harmony Korine My tweet: Trash Humpers (2010)- Performance art that’s a brutal condemnation of those choosing to consume hatred and live as hypocrites. **** out of 5 Other thoughts: Harmony Korine has always been the kind of filmmaker that won’t appeal to mass audiences. Though I hear Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy are both tough sits, I can’t imagine anything he has made or will ever make being as alienating as Trash Humpers, a movie that probably deserves to be described as performance art more than as a movie. It plays like [...]
