Samsung Galaxy S II Will be available on May 1st in the UK

Samsung has just delivered a most welcome (and concrete) bit of news for British smartphone lovers. Its next do-it-all Android superphone will be available on May 1st in the United Kingdom. The Galaxy S II will emulate its predecessor by being made available “across all major networks and retailers.” The press release promises a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, which indicates we’re looking at the Exynos 4210 variant of this handset. We’ll try to track down availability information for the rest of Europe, but at least Brits can now stop fretting about the delay / non-delay [...]

Samsung Confirmed Gingerbread Update for Galaxy S in March

Samsung Germany has apparently confirmed that the Galaxy S will get an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in March 2011. The news was revealed at a Samsung blogger event in Frankfurt today, and tweeted out by Frank Feil according to SmartDroid. We’re assuming, however, that this refers to the European Galaxy S, likely kicking off with the unlocked versions of the Honeycomb smartphone. US carrier-specific variants will probably have to wait a lot longer; some, like the Captivate on AT&T, have only just got Android 2.2 Froyo after all. Oddly enough, Samsung Italy is only just preparing to [...]

Motorola Atrix 4G Rooted

If you thought the lack of root on the Atrix 4G was going to save you a couple hundred bucks next week… well, we hate to break the bad news, but you’re going to need to find another excuse not to buy it (more on that in a second). Long story short, the phone’s already been rooted by a gentleman over on the ever-resourceful xda-developers forums, which means you can do all the normal things that require root access like enabling the standard Froyo mobile hotspot feature, using root apps like Titanium Backup (pictured above), and generally looking 1337 compared to your friends [...]

Toshiba’s First Glasses-free TV

In truly surprising news, it appears that a combination of high prices, small sizes and a somewhat questionable viewing experience have caused Toshiba’s new GL1 line of glasses-free 3DTVs to sell more slowly than the company expected. In their first month of availability the 20-inch set, priced at 240,000 yen ($2,940), sold around 500 units while its 12-inch cousin sold even less than that, despite projections both would sell at least 1,000 units. Don’t think Toshiba’s letting its hard work go the way of the old Sony XEL-1 OLED TVs just yet, as we saw at CES, it’s [...]

Download Samsung Smart Touch Android Remote App

Great news, channel surfers — Samsung’s Smart Touch Android remote application is now finally available in the Android Marketplace as a free download nearly nine months after originally launching on iOS. If you dropped a hefty quantity of cheddar on a new model C Samsung Internet TV in 2010 (those with older models are out of luck) and can’t wait for your Android handset to assimilate yet another life-task, today could be momentous. We say ‘could’ simply because our CES hands-on with the software wasn’t exactly swell — but then again, a massive trade [...]

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant will get Froyo tomorrow

Sorry, gents, but your conspiracy theories are wholly kaput — not only is a Samsung Galaxy S getting Android 2.2 stateside, but the speedy software update will start rolling out tomorrow on T-Mobile USA. That’s the word direct from T-Mo chief marketing officer Cole Brodman, who tossed the news to PC Magazine this afternoon, saying that the delay was a “quality control and timing issue.” Apparently, there’s extra work involved in skinning the operating system and adding exclusive apps like WiFi calling — though he didn’t confirm either would specifically [...]
