Haier’s transparent organic TV

What’s the worst thing about your TV? If you said “opaqueness,” boy have we got the set from you. This is a 22-inch transparent organic TV from the folks at Haier (you know, the ones who also showed off that mind control TV today). It’s a slim display with a metal bezel that has a clear OLED at its center with a 1680 x 1050 resolution. The images appeared pretty sharp on screen, though the colors didn’t particularly pop. And really, this thing isn’t likely headed to any living rooms in the near future — Haier sees it more as an advertising tool, letting [...]

Samsung to unveil new Android device November 8th

Two weeks. That’s how long you’ll have to wait before Samsung Mobile officially shows off its latest Android device. We say officially, because as these things go, there’s a chance the gadget will make it into the limelight via unofficial channels. No indication what it might be, but if we had our say, the Continuum and its secondary OLED screen would make for a nice treat.

Samsung OLED TV Coming Soon

Samsung has once again been making noises about OLED TV, and promised that it will be coming soon. Samsung has also confirmed that it sees OLED display as an excellent option for 3D TV – with its fast response time and deep contrast ratios it would make sense for the two technologies to mix. However, given that Samsung has long talked up how it is the only OLED producer in mass production at the moment, it’s odd that it doesn’t already have an OLED TV in the marketplace, especially given that Asian rivals Sony and LG have both launched a 14- and 15-inch display respectively. No [...]

Sony builds astonishing roll-up OLED display of the future

Look what Sony’s done with an OLED display. This 4.1-inch screen is so thin and flexible, it can wrap around a pencil-sized cylinder. Its 432 x 240 resolution still shines bright, albeit not quite perfectly, with some funky horizontal and vertical lines. Even so, it’s so much better than any others that came before, it represents a breakthrough. We’ve seen rollable displays before, but never with such apparent contrast and color. And, unlike any previous attempts, this one can keep showing video even as it’s being rolled up. Sony says the screen has a contrast ratio of [...]

Could this be the wrist computer of 2020?

Ten years from now, flexible OLED touchscreens will be commonplace. Here’s a design concept that incorporates that technology in a most delightful way. Designer Hiromi Kiriki taps Sony for this spectacular Nextep wrist computer that does just about anything full-sized computers can do today. Notice the handy pullout keyboard, and augmenting that OLED touchscreen is a holographic projector for large-scale viewing. Sure, it’s a design concept, but just look at the gorgeous pictures, keeping in mind that all of this technology is almost ready. We so want this, but it’s probably [...]

How to build a cheap, long-lasting OLED screen in 2 minutes

Our eternal lust for an affordable OLED screen might finally be satisfied. Dupont Displays figured out a cheap way to print the ultra-thin, sharp and efficient screens, and solved one of the nagging problems of OLED displays: longevity. The secret is a new and sophisticated multi-nozzle printing process. These Dupont geniuses improved the erstwhile unreliable technique, which used to result in poorly-performing screens with short life and astronomical prices (try $2,725 for the biggest OLED display so far, and that’s only 15 inches diagonal). Now these guys can print a 50-inch screen in [...]

Future is almost here: OLED wallpaper coming in 2012

We were hoping OLED wallpaper was on its way, but didn’t realize it was going to be as soon as 2012. In just two years, gorgeous wallpaper like this will start to replace light bulbs. Don’t like this design? OLED lighting will take on a variety of forms, limited only by the imaginations of its creators. OLED lighting is tremendously efficient, 2.5 times more so than energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs. That means a wallpaper panel like this can operate at an astonishing 150 lumens per watt, requiring just 3 to 5 Volts to power the OLED film that can function as anything from light-emitting [...]

In Depth: 10 new technologies that will revolutionise your life

Staying up to date with everything that’s going on in PCs and tech is almost impossible, so these are the ten technologies that you should be most aware of, as they’re the ones that’ll make the biggest difference to your life. 1. 3D gaming The fact that to get any kind of 3D image from a 2D screen means wearing a pair of sunglasses or worse means that three dimensional gaming isn’t quite as convincing as multitouch and natural user interfaces, even though the two have been commoditised at almost the same time. An Acer Aspire 5738 laptop with a 3D display costs about [...]
