Modern Warfare 3 biggest entertainment launch ever

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch ever, according to Activision, with the the games company managing to shift 6.5 million copies of the first person shooter and make $400 million in the first 24 hours of release – and that’s just in the UK and US. The launch has smashed through a record that was previously held by Call of Duty: Black Ops and before this, you’ve guessed it, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Other records broken include the number of people on Xbox Live at any one time, which happened because everyone was playing Modern Warfare 3. Better [...]

More Facebook friends linked to bigger brain areas

Scientists have found a direct link between the number of “friends” a person has on Facebook and the size of certain brain regions, raising the possibility that using online social networks might change our brains. The four brain areas involved are known to play a role in memory, emotional responses and social interactions. So far, however, it is not possible to say whether having more Facebook connections makes particular parts of the brain larger or whether some people are simply pre-disposed, or “hard-wired,” to have more friends. “The exciting question now is [...]

National UnFriend Day: Time to Pull the Trigger

As proclaimed by Jimmy Kimmel—in defense of the real meaning of friendship—today is National UnFriend Day. You see that list of Facebook people you used to know and only marginally care about now? Let’s give some the boot. Kimmel’s got a damn good point—Zuckerberg’s metaphor for companionship, lust, and platonic palling is pretty meaningless for most people. Going through my own friend list—currently sitting at a relatively modest 607—I can see that those I’ve chosen to label as my friends might as well be strangers. Some of them I’ve taken deliberate [...]

FaceTime Equipped iPad 2 to Launch in Q1 of 2011

Apple Insider has received information from a “person with proven knowledge of Apple’s future product plans” that Apple will soon be introducing FaceTime/video-chat capable iPads. How soon exactly? Well, according to the “person with proven knowledge”, no later than the first quarter of 2011!, and it makes sense cause that is the time when Apple introduced first-gen iPad early this year. The person also claims that there was an ambitious push inside Apple to refresh the launch ahead of the year’s holiday shopping season. Though the inaugural fleet of iPads has seen surprising momentum [...]

Why Women Make More Eye Contact With Men When Communicating

Research has shown that women make more eye contact than men do. Why should this be so? Below are just a few of the possible reasons why: Connection: Women are other-oriented. They seem more interested in affiliation, bonding, acceptance, and social maintenance. Consequently, they look more. Intimacy: Intimacy is important for women, and making eye contact is one way a woman tries to get close. Think of a couple out for their anniversary dinner, gazing into each other’s eyes. In conversation with people they like, women tend to increase their looking while talking. Sincerity/Deception: [...]

AMD Killed ATI Brand Name

I still remember my first 3D card—the ATI Rage Pro—so it’s with great sadness that I’m writing this: AMD has officially killed the ATI brand. OK, I lied. I really don’t give a damn. AMD has decided to kill the ATI brand after a study showed that most people don’t care much about it: 1) AMD brand preference triples when the person surveyed is aware of the ATI-AMD merger. 2) The AMD brand is viewed as stronger than ATI when compared to graphics competitors (presumably NVIDIA). 3) The Radeon and Fire Pro brands themselves (without ATI being attached to them) are very [...]

Microsoft Kinect Tear Down

With Microsoft’s Kinect ready to make its appearance for Christmas, T3 has been flown out to the US to take a lengthy look at how the technology works. Three in-depth features from the gadget maestros take in the sensor, the motor and the way the voice recognition works. “[The motion sensor] is made of two main parts: a projector and an IR VGA camera. The former bounces out a laser across the entire field of play, which the camera picks up to separate you from your sofa on what’s called a ‘depth field’,” explains T3. Pixels “It’s essentially [...]

Full-Body Scanners Saving Images

Who saw this coming? Oh, right: most everyone. Gotcha. The Federal Government has admitted to storing those full-body scan images that had privacy advocates so worked up over the past few months. This, despite the fact that it said it wouldn’t store the images. Say one thing, do another. Yay. Even more annoying is the fact that these full-body scanning machines were sold to us as not even being able to store images at all! As if there was no memory for the pictures to go after they had been taken. Clearly we have been misled. The U.S. Marshal Service admitted to storing tens of thousands of [...]
