Review: Ortofon Cadenza Red

Goldring may be able to trace its roots back (slightly) further, but Ortofon is definitely one of the old guard of audio. The company invented the moving-coil cartridge in 1948 and its legendary (for once not an overstatement) SPU model from 1959 is still in production, in various guises. The current range runs to 38 distinct models of cartridge, from the £40-odd OM5E to the Windfeld at over £2,000 – and that’s not including the DJ range, which has even more market dominance than the hi-fi products. Many classic LPs were mastered with an Ortofon cutterhead – the ‘inverse’ [...]

Samsung and LG to launch 3D TVs in March

Samsung and LG are to release their 3D-toting displays in March, just three months after announcing the TV sets to the world at CES 2010. According to the Korean Times, both the LED 9000 series, which is Samsung’s super-gorgeous 3D skinny range and the Infinia LE9500, LG’s 3D range, are to be released in March – which should point to a summer UK release date for the TVs. LG vs Samsung “For some people it could be a good excuse to put their current HDTV in the bedroom and put the new 3D TV in the family room,” said an LG Electronics representative, grasping somewhat at [...]

Hands on: Sony Vaio E series laptop review

We were completely enamoured with Sony’s last excursion into the lower end of the laptop market, the NW series – a computer which eschewed all the high-end trappings of its more expensive stablemates in the Vaio range but kept the price reasonably under control. Now Sony is replacing the NW series with the E series (launched alongside the W series ‘eco’ range) a laptop range which is, again, hell-bent on bringing a feature-heavy device for those light in the pocket. Processing power comes in the form of the Intel’s latest Core i3 processor. This is a dual core which brings [...]

Hands on: ST5000 and ST5500 camera review

Samsung’s assault on the camera market concludes with the ST5500 and ST5000 range. Sporting the biggest OLED screen ever seen on a camera – a humongous 3.7 inches (ST5500 only) – Samsung has gone for both style and flashy functionality with these compacts. As soon as you pick up the ST5500, there’s no denying just how slim and light it is. There’s a nice feel to the camera as well which comes from Samsung using a technique known as hydro-forming to create its cameras. While it uses this in its TV range, the process allows Samsung to injection-mould the chassis creating an [...]

Hands on: Samsung WB650 camera review

Samsung has unveiled its latest camera range for 2010 and with it, a number of interesting photo-related features. TechRadar managed to get a little hands-on time with the Samsung WB650 range and we have to consider ourselves impressed. Packing a 12.2MP sensor – plenty of pixel power for the average user – the camera manages to be easy enough to use for the amateur but powerful enough for enthusiasts. The WB650 is a good deal thicker than its ST70 stablemate but this camera is all about functionality rather than style. This can be seen in the camera’s zoom lens. It’s one of the [...]

The North American International Auto Show is still in full swing in Detroit, with the largest electric and hybrid vehicle lineup to date. Sexy new ASUS LCD monitor

Back in September of this year, ASUS had announced the launch of a new range of rather sexy LCD monitors called the Designo MS. That range has now been further upgraded to the LS series with the latest model called the Designo LS246H. The new monitor is designed to be as eco friendly as possible. Firstly, it’s manufactured with 50% less hazardous materials than most other monitors and secondly it uses up to 30% less power. This 23.6-inch monitor is equipped to handle both HDMI and VGA connectivity. That means you’ll be able to very easily connect your video game console or any other device [...]
