Sony just revealed the new laser they’re developing alongside Tohoku University. Regardless of the future of physical media, the specs are astounding to consider.
The blue-violet laser fires ultra fast bursts of very thin beams of light. The wavelength measures 405 nanometers, pulsing for durations of 3 picoseconds. (A nanometer, as most of you know, is one billionth of a meter. And a picosecond is one-trillionth of a second.) The light output will be over 100x that of similar lasers.
Such a laser could read a next generation media with 20x the capacity of Blu-ray, meaning you could [...]

INDIAN WELLS: Having finally broken her French Open jinx last year, Svetlana Kuznetsova is banking on a similar breakthrough at the Indian Wells WTA tournament where she has twice finished runner-up.
Russian Kuznetsova is the number one seed for the high-profile event in the California desert and she has targeted a 13th WTA Tour title to bury memories of a stuttering start to this season.
“I prepared pretty well for this year and I know I am playing well but I need some matches to get myself going,” Kuznetsova told reporters at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Wednesday.
Sharp has told TechRadar that is keen to force its way back to the forefront of the UK public’s consciousness, admitting that the brand has not been viewed as strongly since a high-profile sponsorship with Manchester United ended 10 years ago.
From 1982 to 2000 Sharp was the shirt sponsor of one of the biggest sports brands in the world in a period of explosive growth for Manchester United and huge success for the club.
However, Vodafone took over the sponsorship for the 2000-2001 season, and Sharp’s long association with the Old Trafford club ended.

Covent Garden’s flower cellars provided the setting for Topshop Unique’s homage to the bucolic. Think Lou Dalton’s hawthorn strewn AW/10 menswear collection and multiply that by ten to get the picture. With the who’s who of celebrity land lining the front row – Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung, Liberty Ross, Leigh Lezark, Jefferson Hack and Giles Deacon amongst others – showmanship was top of the agenda. Last season’s Marc Jacob’s bunny ears are this season’s antlers. Satchels? Still in, along with back packs and waisted leather pocketbooks. [...]
To say there are no shortage of Apple Tablet rumors leading up to tomorrow’s event is perhaps the king of all understatements right now. But here’s maybe the best one yet. Apparently, Fox is in the process of cutting a deal with Apple to get the tablet on an upcoming episode of 24 this season.
That news comes from Rodney Charters, who is the director of photography on the show. He’s been tweeting about it pretty much all day, first saying it might be in episode 20 (episode 5 just aired this week), but then saying it might actually be more like episode 22. At one point, Charters [...]
