Here’s a feature that Hollywood doesn’t want to see become standard on Blu-ray players: the ability to copy HD movies from Blu-ray discs to your home server. But that’s just what the new Kaleidescape M300 and M500 do. They’ll import any Blu-ray, DVD or CD that you wish onto your server for playback later.
The catch? Well, there are two of them. The first is that it will require you to have the physical disc in the player to play back the ripped versions, which sort of defeats the entire purpose of ripping. The second is the price: the M330 will set you back $2,495 with [...]

LG’s N2B1 is the world’s first NAS (Network Attached Storage) box with an integrated Blu-ray writer. The benefit of this is obvious: you can quickly and easily archive off upwards of 50GB of files to Blu-ray media as and when you need them.
However, this burner won’t play commericial BDs or rip them to the drives.
The unit itself is well designed. The glossy white casing with black door means you won’t immediately feel a need to quarantine it in a boot room, and there’s a pop-up cardreader (SD, XD, MS) and USB in the roof for easy backups.
In use, it’s pleasingly [...]
Usenet has become the ageing, drunken uncle of the internet family. It used to be fun, but it’s seen better days and most 21st century internet users ignore it.
Yet while much of its functionality has been superseded by web forums, social networking sites and torrent trackers, there’s still some very good discussion and download groups there. Perhaps it’s time to rediscover this most ancient of online facilities.
Unison 2 makes it really straightforward to access Usenet servers and navigate newsgroups. There’s an easy-access directory for popular subjects, or you can pick [...]
The MP3 codec is 15 years old this year. Unlike its peers, it won’t be studying for its GCSEs or sneaking off behind the bike sheds for a quick snog: it’ll just be quietly celebrating yet another anniversary as the definitive format for music of our time.
Other technically superior formats have tried to displace it over the last decade and a half, but MP3 is as synonymous with digital music as a certain brand of vacuum cleaner is with cleaning the carpets.
The question this raises is simple: if MP3 and its later video equivalents have been around for all that time, why is it still [...]
