Tablet costs less than half of the iPad, plays 1080p

We had to do a double take when we saw the $180 price on this 7-inch X10 touchscreen Tablet PC. Amid a sea of me-too slate PCs, this one makes lofty claims, including the most eyebrow-raising of all: the ability to play 1080p video over its HDMI port. If this cheap 800×480 Wi-Fi and GPS-packing tablet can do what its maker says, it could be a game changer. Instead of spending $1000 on that bulky home theater PC we showed you yesterday, or $500 on the cheapest iPad, you could just plug this baby into your HDTV and watch a huge variety of Blu-ray-quality video formats, including H.264 and Matroska [...]

iPad finally arriving overseas, ending hoarding and reselling

Since the iPad’s U.S. launch, Apple has had to restrict sales to two per person. That’s because the U.S. has been the only place to buy them, and Europeans have been trying to buy 10 at a time to bring home and sell to friends. Looks like that won’t be an issue for much longer. On May 28, the following countries get to hand over more of their hard-earned money to Apple for a shiny piece of tech: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K.. And then in July, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand [...]

Swiss robot performs virtual autopsies, preserves bodies digitally

The University of Bern in Switzerland is using a robot known as the Virtobot to not only study dead bodies virtually, but create a digital copy of the cadaver so that it might be studied years down the line. The Virtobot uses MRI technology and computer topography software to get a complete look at a body without having to open it up. From the Swiss National Science Foundation: Michael Thali and his team also use a specialised robot in their work. They call this forensic high-tech assistant Virtobot. In the Virtopsy laboratory, it projects a light bar onto the corpse being examined. The imaged [...]

Switzerland poised to ban violent videogames

Switzerland looks likely to ban any game with a PEGI 16+ or 18+ rating after the country passed a law that bans violent games outright in the country. The ruling is similar to the one in place in Australia and could mean that any game not suitable for children will be banned from sale in Switzerland. The minutiae of the legislation has yet to be written, but now the ruling has been passed new titles like God of War III may not see the light of day in the country. Gaming rules The ruling states that any title that “requires cruel acts of violence against humans and humanlike creatures for [...]

Kaboom! Large Hadron Collider triples its own world record

The only thing better than claiming a world record is utterly smashing it, and that’s exactly what the Large Hadron Collider did this morning in Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC previously managed to reach an energy of 1.18 TeV. I guess I should be embarrassed I ever reported that as news, because that was apparently small potatoes: the LHC has pretty much tripled that previous benchmark and is now circulating beams at a whopping 3.5 TeV. “Getting the beams to 3.5 TeV is testimony to the soundness of the LHC’s overall design, and the improvements we’ve made since the breakdown [...]
