Toshiba AC100 Netbook

Finishing off the hat-trick of laptops, Toshiba’s AC100 is their first machine to run on Android, and is shaping up to be a very tidy netbook with up to eight hours of battery, or up to SEVEN DAYS’ standby life. Yep, seven days. It runs on an NVIDIA Tegra 250 chip, with an insy-winsy 512MB of DDR2 RAM, and 8GB NAND flash memory. The SD/MMC card reader will expand the storage so you can easily cart around more media if needed, and the 1.3MP webcam with microphone will get you using video-chatting apps once downloaded from the Market. It’s running Android 2.1 Eclair, and [...]

Toshiba Portege R700

All those ultraportables using Intel’s ULV Core processors just got taken to school: Toshiba’s Portégé R700 is as light as a MacBook Air, as powerful as a MacBook Pro, and measures an inch thick with a DVD drive. Standard. Putting a full voltage processor in such a thin and light frame really is a neat trick, one that Toshiba accomplished in part with something they’re calling Airflow Cooling Technology. And while most companies are stripping ultraportable notebooks of their DVD drives—usually citing space and weight issues—Toshiba’s managed to keep theirs [...]

Dual-Screen Toshiba Libretto W100

In addition to the zippy Portégé, Toshiba’s also today announcing the Libretto W100. It’s a full Windows dual-screen “ultra-mobile PC” that’s not quite a tablet and not quite a netbook. In short: it’s one curious little gadget. The Libretto has the specs of a halfway decent ultraportable: a 1.2 GHz Pentium U5400 processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 62GB SSD, a USB port and a microSD slot. But that body isn’t really like anything else, unfolding to reveal two 7-inch multitouch displays. The screens can either be used together or independently meaning one [...]

Toshiba’s 128GB Flash Memory

Your mobile phone could soon be getting a massive memory boost if Samsung and Toshiba have anything to with it, as both companies have announced a new type of NAND flash memory module. Toshiba has unveiled what is a 128GB flash memory module which it is claiming is the first time anyone has crammed 16 64Gbit NAND chips together. We tried it yesterday with 16 Nando chips, but it didn’t quite have the desired effect. This memory has been optimised for use in mobile phones, so expect some higher capacity internal memory units to hit the shelves next year. Don’t expect it to automatically [...]

Toshiba working on world’s lightest 13-inch notebook

According to rumors, Toshiba is prepping the world’s lightest 13-inch notebook, weighing in at under 2 pounds with an SSD drive on board. It’s also rumored to have a fast-charging battery that can get juiced up to almost full in a mere 10 minutes. Other specs should include Core i3, i5 or i7 configurations, 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive that can be replaced with an optional 512GB SSD. All signs point to it being announced in the near future, so stay tuned.

Review: HP Compaq Presario CQ61-402SA

The HP Compaq Presario CQ61-402SA is an entry level machine for those after basic performance and portability. Usability is good, however, and while it can’t compete with the Acer Aspire 5732Z-443G32Mn and Samsung R530 on many levels, it is certainly worth a look. The laptop compares closely with the Toshiba Satellite Pro L450-13R in terms of performance. Both laptops feature the same processor, the same amount of memory and the same graphics card and yet this machine performs better across the board. As a result, it is able to run programs faster than the Toshiba and offers more power for [...]

Ultra-dense flash memory could lead to 256GB iPad

Toshiba — the world’s No. 2 NAND flash memory maker behind Samsung according to Reuters — is preparing the next advance in flash technology with even denser memory chips (similar to the silicon wafer pictured above). The company currently products circuitry with widths of 32 and 43 nanometers, and wants to move into the 20s with 25nm chips. Denser chips means more memory can be packed into the same-sized space. It’s advances like this that are why flash drives have gone from half a gigabyte to multiple gigs over the last decade. It’s not as simple as just flicking [...]

Review: Toshiba 32RV635

It’s no surprise that the Toshiba 32RV635 is one of the more affordable LCD TVs, though it’s far from the cheapest set in Toshiba’s current range. This means that it has a number of unexpected features compared to similarly priced rivals. For starters, the LCD panel boasts a Full HD resolution and there are an impressive four HDMI inputs, which should be enough for any HD gadget lover. Further connections include a USB port for displaying digital snaps and a hook-up for your PC alongside all the usual suspects. Most impressive of all, however, is the video processing that quietly [...]

Bill Gates and Toshiba building commercial mini nuclear reactors

While most of us would be content to retire if we were one of the richest men on the planet, Bill Gates is turning his sites sights to nuclear power. His startup company TerraPower is working with Toshiba to create small nuclear reactors, designed to help developing countries. TerraPower and Toshiba are creating traveling-wave reactors that use depleted uranium that only has to be replaced once every 60 to 100 years. Conventional light-water reactors require refueling with enriched uranium every 4 or 5 years. The new traveling-wave reactors are small and can generate enough power for small countries [...]

Toshiba made a cute robotic butler — meet ‘Wheelie’

Whenever Toshiba dabbles in the world of robotics, the results are pretty interesting. Case in point: the ApriPoko we showed you a while back, which acts as a remote control for your whole house as well as a life assistant in general. Now the company is showing off another robot, “Wheelie,” and it’s as quirky as you’d expect. While it doesn’t have arms to clean up your room and do your dishes, what it does have is an uncanny sense of Segway-inspired balance and a head that is perfect for resting plates on. That’s right, next time you have a posh dinner party, [...]
