Tablet costs less than half of the iPad, plays 1080p

We had to do a double take when we saw the $180 price on this 7-inch X10 touchscreen Tablet PC. Amid a sea of me-too slate PCs, this one makes lofty claims, including the most eyebrow-raising of all: the ability to play 1080p video over its HDMI port. If this cheap 800×480 Wi-Fi and GPS-packing tablet can do what its maker says, it could be a game changer. Instead of spending $1000 on that bulky home theater PC we showed you yesterday, or $500 on the cheapest iPad, you could just plug this baby into your HDTV and watch a huge variety of Blu-ray-quality video formats, including H.264 and Matroska [...]

All Blue-Eyed Humans Have Common Ancestor

New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today. “Originally, we all had brown eyes.”New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. How Facebook And FriendFeed Became Turkish Delights

For the past couple of days I’ve been in Turkey, absorbing the tech scene in Istanbul (tomorrow I’m in Munich, Germany, for DLD). I was invited over by the Nubridge Venture Summit which brought together a panoply of European VCs to listen to Turkish tech companies set out their wares. What emerged is a picture of a country in high growth, as this economy and its entrepreneurs latch on to the possibilities offered by the Internet and mobile platforms. But first, let me tell you a story. Two years ago I contacted Turkey’s pre-eminent “Web 2.0″ blogger, Arda Kutsal of [...]

Goldman Sachs Bullish on Pakistan

Pakistan’s KSE-100 stock index surged 55% in 2009, a year that also saw the South Asian nation wracked by increased violence and its state institutions described by various media talking heads as being on the verge of collapse. Even more surprising is the whopping 825% increase in KSE-100 from 1999 to 2009, which makes it a significantly better performer than the BRIC nations. BRIC darling China has actually underperformed its peers, rising only 150 percent compared with energy-rich Brazil (520 percent) and Russia (326 percent) or well-regulated India (274 percent), which some investors [...]

Comparing India and Pakistan in 2010

Dr. Ishrat Husain, a former World Bank senior official and an ex governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, wrote an article captioned “India, Pakistan: a comparison” at the end of the first five decades of two nations’ existence as independent states. To my knowledge, Dr. Hussain has not done an update of his article since it was first published. Although about three years too late, this post is my attempt to present a comparison of the two South Asian nations after sixty years of independence. Here is the opening paragraph from Dr. Husain’s article from the late 1990s, which [...]

Tea Stimulus For Pakistan’s Economy

Pakistanis’ great hospitality to strangers and strong addiction to tea has given birth to many proverbs. The best known of these is the one about the “three cups of tea” which goes like this: On the first cup, you’re a stranger, and on the second, a guest. By the third cup, you’re family. Pakistan is the world’s third-largest importer of tea with nearly 175 million kg of annual consumption, costing an estimated $500 million, and increasing at about 4% a year. It imports tea from 21 countries, with the lion’s share of black tea imports coming from Kenya, Bangladesh [...]
