Review Motorola Milestone XT720

Motorola has just outed a Europe-bound Milestone XT720, a handset intended to grab the attention of camera lovers with an 8 megapixel sensor, 720p / 24fps video and — a first for Android handsets — a xenon flash. Speaking of Android, this will come loaded up with version 2.1 when it launches later this month. Plans for 2.2 upgrades are, as usual, not yet formalized and not under discussion. Other specs include a 3.7-inch, 480 x 854 screen, a 550MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, and a promised 9 hours of talk time and 320 hours of standby time. It looks very much like Moto’s selection [...]

Tablet costs less than half of the iPad, plays 1080p

We had to do a double take when we saw the $180 price on this 7-inch X10 touchscreen Tablet PC. Amid a sea of me-too slate PCs, this one makes lofty claims, including the most eyebrow-raising of all: the ability to play 1080p video over its HDMI port. If this cheap 800×480 Wi-Fi and GPS-packing tablet can do what its maker says, it could be a game changer. Instead of spending $1000 on that bulky home theater PC we showed you yesterday, or $500 on the cheapest iPad, you could just plug this baby into your HDTV and watch a huge variety of Blu-ray-quality video formats, including H.264 and Matroska [...]

Man ‘hacks’ U.S. iPad 3G to work in Europe (with a meat cleaver)

We do love clever hacks here at DVICE, though John Benson is taking the concept literally. Who knew all you’d need to convert the iPad 3G to U.K. cellular standards is a pair of scissors? Or, as John Benson prefers, a meat clever. The U.K. resident was faced with a disparity in SIM cards once he received his iPad from over the pond, writing on his website, “This morning, my shiny new iPad 3G 64Gb arrived from the USA! The only problem was, it had an AT&T MicroSIM and as yet there is no such thing in the UK.” His solution? “Get a chopping board, a meat cleaver and a [...]

How to build PVR for free

Personal video recorders (PVRs) are usually quite expensive – and for good reason. This is the device you are entrusting your favourite entertainment to: shows like 24 and Lost, that crucial sporting fixture or last summer’s Hollywood blockbuster that you missed at the cinema and are desperate to see. What if your PVR runs out of space and is unable to record anything on the one night you’re kept late at work and can’t make it home to watch your team in the cup tie of the century? Even worse, what if your PVR’s hard disk fails completely, losing that entire series [...]

ACTA goes public

Michael Geist sez, The New Zealand round of ACTA [ed: the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty being negotiated outside of the United Nations] negotiations concluded earlier today with participants promising to release the draft text next week. This obviously represents a major new development that reflects the mounting global pressure for greater transparency that built in the weeks leading up to the negotiations. Since the text has already been leaked, the importance of the official release arises less from revealing what is in ACTA and more from showing how much progress [...]

Razer makes gaming mouse for lefties

Left-handed PC gamers finally have a reason to celebrate, with gaming peripheral aficionados Razer releasing a mouse specifically designed for southpaws. The Razer DeathAdder is already a popular gaming mouse, but its design made it difficult for the left-handed to get on with. However, the California based company has rectified that with a special leftie’s edition of the mouse, which will make a refreshing change for those who have been making do with a mouse that squeaks both ways. Requested “Leftie gamers have long been requesting that we develop a gaming grade mouse that is [...]
